Arkansas’ industrial history and natural asbestos deposits have contributed to the ongoing risk of asbestos exposure for many workers and residents. Between 1999 and 2017, 1,848 Arkansas residents died from asbestos-related illnesses, including 323 from mesothelioma, a devastating cancer with one known cause—asbestos exposure.
The state has two known sites of naturally occurring asbestos, one near Hot Springs and another in the Russellville area. However, the highest exposure rates have been reported in Jonesboro, Little Rock, Pine Bluff, and Fayetteville due to the industries operating in these regions.
Occupations at the highest risk of exposure in Arkansas include construction workers, industrial laborers, mechanics, and military personnel. Many workers were exposed to asbestos at construction sites, shipyards, power plants, and manufacturing facilities, putting them at risk of developing mesothelioma decades later.

Occupations at Risk for Asbestos Exposure
Many workers across Arkansas unknowingly faced prolonged asbestos exposure in the workplace, putting them at risk of developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
Asbestos was widely used in school buildings throughout Arkansas, including at the following institutions:
- University of Arkansas – Jonesboro and Fayetteville campuses have faced long-term asbestos issues
- Arkasas State College
- State Teachers College
Asbestos was commonly used in manufacturing facilities due to its durability and high heat resistance. Reynolds Metals, which manufactured Reynolds Wrap Aluminum Foil, operated in Arkadelphia and Malvern until both closed in 1985. It is one major employer known to have exposed workers to asbestos.
Members of the military faced asbestos exposure on bases throughout Arkansas, including Fort Chaffee and Little Rock Air Force Base. At Little Rock Air Force Base, a 2013 report from the base commander confirmed that asbestos-containing materials were still present in many buildings, posing an ongoing health risk. Efforts to address the issue date back decades and include an October 1994 emergency order to prevent the imminent release of asbestos into the air.
Oil refineries frequently used asbestos to insulate equipment and protect workers from extreme heat. Asbestos exposure risk for refinery workers is high at these facilities, including those operated by the following:
- Tri-State Refining Company
- Helena Cotton Oil Company
- Cross Oil
Due to the intense heat generated during energy production, power plants relied on asbestos for insulation and fireproofing. Arkansas Power & Light, or AP&L, was the state’s primary electricity provider for much of the 20th century and used asbestos in its facilities until regulations limited its use.

Superfund Sites
The Mountain Pine Pressure Treating Superfund Site in Plainview, Arkansas, was contaminated by hazardous materials due to decades of wood treatment operations using pentachlorophenol, or PCP, and chromated copper arsenate, or CCA. The 95-acre site housed three abandoned wood-treating facilities that operated from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s. The buildings and tanks at the site contained significant levels of asbestos, posing significant health risks until cleanup efforts were completed in 2005. While major remediation has been conducted, ongoing groundwater monitoring continues to ensure the long-term safety of the area.

Why Should You Trust the Lanier Law Firm to Handle your Mesothelioma Case?
Options for Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Compensation in Arkansas
The primary way for victims to seek compensation for mesothelioma is by filing a lawsuit against the companies responsible for their asbestos exposure. A successful mesothelioma claim can provide financial relief for medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Most mesothelioma lawsuits in Colorado result in settlements, allowing victims to receive compensation without going to trial. However, if necessary, our team of skilled mesothelioma attorneys can take the case to court and fight for the maximum compensation possible.
Many asbestos companies filed for bankruptcy to avoid lawsuits, but the courts required them to establish asbestos trust funds to compensate asbestos-exposure victims. An estimated $30 billion remains in these trust funds. A trust fund claim offers a faster and simpler way to obtain financial support from multiple sources.
Veterans exposed to asbestos during military service may qualify for mesothelioma VA disability benefits. Mesothelioma has a 100 percent VA disability rating, meaning veterans might be entitled to receive free medical care and over $3,800 in monthly compensation.
If you or a loved one has been exposed to asbestos and diagnosed with mesothelioma, an Arkansas mesothelioma lawyer can help determine the best legal path for your case.
Mesothelioma Filing Deadlines in Arkansas
Under Arkansas Code § 16-56-105, individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma have three years from the date of diagnosis to file a personal injury lawsuit. Similarly, families seeking justice for a loved one who has died from mesothelioma must file a wrongful death claim within three years of the date of death.
