Pearl Harbor Naval Complex
The soil and groundwater at Pearl Harbor Naval Complex have been contaminated with asbestos and other materials over decades of active use as a military base. The U.S. Navy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Hawaii Department of Health are working to find and clean up contamination throughout the site, but according to the EPA’s Superfund website, the base’s current condition doesn’t immediately threaten the environment or public health.
Occupations at Risk for Asbestos Exposure
Many major Hawaiian industries, such as sugar production, saw widespread use of asbestos in the mid-20th century. Occupations known for occupational asbestos exposure in Hawaii include the following:
Many homes and other structures built in Hawaii before 1980—including hotels, schools, and government buildings—were made with asbestos-containing materials. A wide range of public-facing employees may have been exposed to asbestos by these components.
The shipping industry has long been a major part of Hawaii’s economy. Unfortunately, asbestos was heavily used in shipbuilding for its heat-resistant properties, both within work facilities and the vessels themselves.
Hawaii was home to numerous sugar manufacturing companies, such as Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company and Hamakua Sugar Plantation. These manufacturers are known to have used asbestos in their plants, potentially exposing workers to deadly fibers. Some types of farming equipment were also known to contain asbestos.
Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard—now known as Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam—is one of several bases operated by the U.S. Military throughout Hawaii. Asbestos was widely used in the military for fireproofing purposes, so older buildings and equipment could have exposed service members, staff, or residents.
Power plants commonly used asbestos products to protect vital components from heat emitted by turbines, generators, and other equipment. Workers who serviced, installed, or operated near asbestos-containing components were at risk of significant exposure.
The Vermiculite of Hawaii plant in Honolulu processed vermiculite contaminated with asbestos for nearly three decades. Workers at the plant and similar facilities may have been heavily exposed to asbestos.
Options for Asbestos and Mesothelioma Compensation in Hawaii
Most Hawaii asbestos-exposure victims are eligible to file a mesothelioma lawsuit against the parties responsible for their illnesses. Through a lawsuit, claimants can seek compensation for the damages relating to their exposure and illness.
Some companies have filed for bankruptcy protection in the face of mounting asbestos-exposure liability. They have established asbestos trust funds to compensate exposure victims. If you’re eligible to file a claim with an asbestos trust fund, the process of obtaining compensation should be faster and simpler than filing a lawsuit.
Veterans exposed to asbestos during their military service can file a claim for disability benefits with the Department of Veterans Affairs, which can provide medical care and monthly payments to mesothelioma victims.
