Industries like steelmaking, agriculture, and paper production may have exposed many Idaho workers to asbestos, a mineral known to cause mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Idaho has eight known naturally occurring asbestos deposits, and the Gem State’s northernmost counties tend to have slightly higher mesothelioma rates than the rest.
Between 1999 and 2025, 212 Idaho residents lost their lives to mesothelioma. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness, our compassionate Idaho mesothelioma lawyers are ready to fight for your rights and protect your family’s future. ARRCOM (Drexler Enterprises)
The ARRCOM Drexler Enterprises site was a one-acre waste oil recycling facility near Rathdrum that operated from 1960 until its abandonment in 1982. Authorities found significant asbestos waste at the site but were more concerned about hazardous materials from waste oil that contaminated nearby soil, which landed the site on the EPA’s Superfund National Priorities List. The EPA conducted cleanup activities from 1983 to 1990 and was able to take the site off the list by 1992.

Occupations at Risk for Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos was widely used for much of the 20th Century for its heat-resistant properties, but some professions were more likely than others to encounter the dangerous mineral at work. Fields at higher risk of asbestos exposure in Idaho included:
Idaho is a hub for the agricultural industry, but many farms and food production facilities are known to have exposed employees to asbestos. Utah-Idaho Sugar Company, Amalgamated Sugar Company, and Carnation Milk Products Company are among Idaho agricultural employers who may have exposed their workers.
Idaho is home to multiple nuclear power facilities, which often contained asbestos to insulate vital equipment against high temperatures. Former workers at the Idaho National Laboratory, A.E.C. Atomic Plant, U.S. Atomic Energy Corporation, or Westinghouse Idaho Nuclear Company are at risk of developing mesothelioma.
Steel plants used asbestos-containing materials due to the mineral’s heat resistance. Workers maintaining equipment or working nearby were often exposed to asbestos. Western Steel, Bunker Hill Smelter, and Gate City Steel operated Idaho steel plants where occupational asbestos exposure was likely.
Idaho’s large forests have made it a key cog in the lumber and paper industry. However, paper mills like Potlatch Corporation, Boise Cascade Paper Mill, and Pulp Mill Warehouse often used asbestos in their production process, potentially exposing their workers to deadly fibers.
Options for Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Compensation in Idaho
Mesothelioma lawsuits are the most common vehicle for victims to recover compensation for their illnesses. Suits typically pursue damages from the parties responsible for the asbestos exposure.
Some companies responsible for widespread asbestos exposure filed for bankruptcy amid mounting liability. As part of their bankruptcy proceedings, they established asbestos trust funds to compensate eligible claimants. Navigating a claim with an asbestos trust is generally simpler and faster than pursuing a lawsuit.
The Department of Veterans Affairs also provides benefits to veterans sickened by asbestos exposure during their military service, including medical coverage and monthly disability payments.
Asbestos Laws and Regulations in Idaho
Idaho laws limit the total amount of compensation available in certain asbestos-related claims. Non-economic damages awarded in a trial verdict are capped at $250,000, restricting companies’ potential liability for harms like emotional trauma or pain and suffering. Additionally, corporations that purchased or merged with a company with asbestos liability are only responsible for the value of the previous company’s assets at the time of the transaction.
Idaho’s statute of limitations for mesothelioma lawsuits is two years following a diagnosis for personal injury cases and two years after the victim died for wrongful death claims. This deadline aligns with many other states, but that doesn’t mean you should wait to get started. Our skilled Idaho mesothelioma attorneys can help you build a convincing case when the evidence is strongest and file well before the legal deadline.
