Natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina have exacerbated the risk, exposing first responders, homeowners, and other workers to asbestos-containing debris.

Occupations at Risk for Asbestos Exposure

Mississippi’s history of jobs associated with asbestos resulted in a wide range of different workers potentially being exposed to deadly fibers. Occupations commonly tied to asbestos exposure in Mississippi include:

Power Plant Workers:

Turbines, generators, and other heat-generating equipment at power plants frequently included asbestos-containing insulation. Maintenance on this equipment could have released asbestos fibers into the air, exposing workers nearby and throughout the area.

Shipyard Workers:

Mississippi shipyards like Ingalls Shipbuilding were prolific in producing ships and other vessels. However, asbestos was commonly used in the shipbuilding industry, including in components like boilers and pipes. Employees of all types, including administrative, maintenance, assembly, and deconstruction workers, have come into contact with asbestos through shipyards.

Chemical Workers:

Mississippi Chemical, Spencer Chemical Company, and Vicksburg Chemical Company are among the chemical companies that used asbestos in their operations. Thanks to its heat-resistant properties, asbestos, everything from insulation to valves and gaskets to protective clothing contained the toxic mineral.

Military Workers:

Military bases used asbestos in many different applications, including brake pads and fireproofing materials. Those living and working at Keesler Air Force Base may have also been exposed to asbestos fibers in the air throughout the facility.

Options for Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Compensation in Mississippi

There are multiple ways to pursue compensation for asbestos-related illnesses in Mississippi. Exposure victims can file a mesothelioma lawsuit to seek personal injury damages against a former employer or other liable parties. Families of a deceased worker can sue for wrongful death.

Many asbestos product manufacturers have filed for bankruptcy protection. As part of their bankruptcy proceedings, they established asbestos trust funds to compensate asbestos-exposure victims. Trust fund claims are typically faster and less complicated than lawsuits. Among the companies responsible for exposing Mississippi residents, Armstrong World Industries and Babcock & Wilcox Company are two that have filed for bankruptcy and established asbestos trust funds.

Veterans exposed to asbestos during their military service can file a claim for medical benefits and monthly payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Those exposed while at work may also be eligible for workers’ compensation.

Asbestos Laws and Regulations in Mississippi

The statute of limitations for personal injury lawsuits in Mississippi is three years after an injury. Thus, Mississippians have three years after their diagnosis to file a lawsuit. Similarly, wrongful death lawsuits must be filed within three years of the victim’s death.

While three years is longer than many states allow, it’s important to get started on your case as soon as possible. Our Mississippi mesothelioma attorneys can help you build a strong case and file all your paperwork within the legal deadline.
