Johns-Manville

Johns-Manville was one of the largest asbestos manufacturers in the U.S., supplying asbestos-containing insulation, roofing, and construction materials. The company knowingly concealed the dangers of asbestos exposure for decades, leading to landmark lawsuits and the creation of the Manville Trust to compensate victims.

The MGM Grand Hotel Fire and Asbestos Risks

The MGM Grand Hotel was the site of a deadly fire in 1980 that required extensive renovation, which included the remediation of asbestos-containing materials. This increased the risk of exposure for workers and first responders and raised awareness of asbestos dangers in Las Vegas Hotels.

Superfund Sites

At least two Nevada sites included in the EPA Superfund National Priorities List are possible sources of asbestos exposure.

The Carson River Mercury Superfund Site was impacted by mining activities that released mercury into the environment. Cleanup efforts for contaminants have been ongoing since the 1990s, with continued monitoring and remediation to limit exposure. Asbestos was also widely used in mining operations.

The Leviathan Mine Superfund Site was a sulfur mine contaminated by various metals from mining operations. Cleanup efforts began in the early 2000s and have focused on removing hazardous materials from the site to reduce risks to nearby residents. Asbestos was also widely used in mining operations.

Occupations at Risk for Asbestos Exposure

Construction Workers

Las Vegas has been built and rebuilt countless times, putting construction workers at significant risk of asbestos exposure. Throughout the 20th century, the construction materials used in many hotels, resorts, and attractions contained asbestos. These materials included insulation, drywall, and fireproofing materials. Workers were exposed to asbestos during construction, renovations, and demolitions. Some notable sites where asbestos was used include the following:

  • Caesar’s Palace
  • Harrah’s Casino
  • The Hilton Hotel
  • The Stardust Hotel Casino
  • The Tropicana
Transportation Workers

As a major tourism and transportation hub, Las Vegas relies on railroads to bring visitors and goods into the city. Workers were likely exposed to asbestos in brakes, gaskets, and engine insulation on trains. Over time, asbestos dust from these components put railway workers at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. Notable sites, some of which are still active, include:

  • Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad
  • Amtrak
  • Union Pacific Railroad Company
Power Plant Workers

Nevada power plants used asbestos-containing insulation and fireproofing materials. Workers at these facilities faced exposure while maintaining or repairing machinery, boilers, and piping. Key power plants where asbestos exposure likely occurred include:

  • Desert Peak Power Plant
  • Empire Farms Power Plant
  • Harry Allen Power Station
  • The Nevada Power Company
Military Personnel

Nevada is home to several military bases where asbestos-containing materials were used in barracks, aircraft, ships, and vehicle insulation. Veterans who served at these bases may have unknowingly been exposed to asbestos. Notable military sites with asbestos concerns include:

  • Nellis Air Force Base
  • Stead Air Force Base
  • Laughlin Air Force Base
  • Hawthorne Army Base

Options for Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Compensation in Nevada

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure in Nevada, there are several compensation options available to help cover medical expenses and secure financial support for your family.

The primary way for victims to seek compensation for mesothelioma is by filing a lawsuit against the companies responsible for their asbestos exposure. A successful claim can provide financial relief for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages. Most mesothelioma lawsuits result in settlements, allowing victims to receive compensation without going to court.

Many asbestos companies filed for bankruptcy to shield themselves from liability. The courts required that they establish asbestos trust funds to compensate victims. An estimated $30 billion is still available in trust funds, offering a faster and simpler way to obtain financial support. Trust fund claims do not require a court appearance and can provide compensation from multiple sources.

Veterans exposed to asbestos during military service may qualify for VA disability benefits. Mesothelioma is rated at 100 percent disability, meaning veterans may receive over $3,800 per month in compensation, along with free medical care.

Asbestos Laws and Regulations in Nevada

Nevada Revised Statutes § 11.190 allows mesothelioma patients two years from diagnosis to file a lawsuit. Similarly, families pursuing a wrongful death claim have two years from their loved one’s passing to take legal action.

Punitive damages may be awarded to punish companies for reckless or intentional misconduct. Nevada generally limits punitive damages to three times the amount of compensatory damages, though exceptions may apply in asbestos cases.
