Roughly 154 Wyoming residents were diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1999 and 2020. During that period, Wyoming had one of the highest mesothelioma death rates in the United States, with 132 residents dying from the rare and aggressive form of cancer.
People employed in the oil and manufacturing industries or who worked in older buildings like schools are among those most likely to have been exposed to asbestos in Wyoming. Asbestos exposure is so prevalent in the Cowboy State that the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality holds an Asbestos Awareness Week at the beginning of April.

Mystery Bridge Rd/U.S. Highway 20
The Mystery Bridge Rd. site, located east of Casper, was previously home to a pair of industrial facilities, one of which was owned by Dow Chemical. Since 1963, the site has been used for oil production. The EPA added the site to its Superfund National Priorities List to clean up various contaminants, including asbestos.
Amoco Standard Oil Refinery
During its long history of oil production, the Amoco Standard Oil Refinery in Casper was contaminated with various hazardous substances, including asbestos.
Laramie Tie Plant
This facility treated railroad ties with creosote, and numerous chemicals contaminated the site. In addition, the plant extensively used asbestos. Thus, workers were likely exposed to asbestos fibers.
Occupations at Risk for Asbestos Exposure
Various industries in Wyoming widely used asbestos for its heat-resistant properties. Fields associated with occupational asbestos exposure in Wyoming include:
Petroleum deposits are abundant in Wyoming. Thus, the oil industry is prevalent in the state. Oil refineries often used asbestos to protect vital equipment from high temperatures. There are also 12 known sites with naturally occurring asbestos where miners could have been exposed to the mineral.
Wyoming plants processing asbestos-containing vermiculite heavily exposed their employees to the deadly mineral. Workers at these plants had a higher chance of developing mesothelioma.
Turbines, generators, and boilers at power plants contained asbestos to shield their components from heat. Workers at companies like Hot Springs Light and Power Company, Black Hills Power and Light Company, and Pacific Power Company may have been exposed to asbestos while working near vital equipment.
Several trona deposits were found in Wyoming, leading companies to open chemical plants and use the ore to make soda ash. Asbestos insulation was used to control temperatures at these plants, potentially endangering nearby workers.
Older buildings, including schools, often contain asbestos materials, which were used for their cheap durability and heat resistance. Students or staff who come across these materials today could be at risk of disturbing and inhaling asbestos fibers. In 2009, the Department of Environmental Quality reprimanded the University of Wyoming for failing to properly inspect buildings for asbestos.

Options for Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Compensation in Wyoming
Most asbestos exposure victims in Wyoming can file a mesothelioma lawsuit against the parties responsible for their asbestos exposure, allowing them to seek damages related to their illness. Some asbestos companies have filed for bankruptcy protection. The courts required them to establish asbestos trust funds, giving those eligible a faster and simpler venue for securing compensation.
Military veterans exposed to asbestos during their service might be entitled to VA benefits for mesothelioma, including monthly disability payments. Those exposed to asbestos on the job can also receive workers’ compensation to help cover medical expenses.
Asbestos Laws and Regulations in Wyoming
Wyoming’s statute of limitations for mesothelioma personal injury claims is four years after the date of diagnosis—a longer deadline than most states have established. However, for wrongful death claims, the deceased mesothelioma patient’s family only has two years from the death to file suit.
Get started on your claim as soon as possible to ensure you build the strongest case, as evidence will fade with time. Our experienced Wyoming mesothelioma attorneys can help you build and file a timely claim, ensuring you receive the compensation you deserve.
